Lake Firiza (RO), Andrea Eberl
About lake monsters and other Romanian stories....
There are many myths about the lake. Like the one of a 7 m fish which every once in a while appears to get its human food. When our divers heard they story the almost refused to continue with their waste diving – so much about rainbow warriors ;o) With two zodiacs we went out to get trash from the ground of the lake. It was a hard job, almost no view to get a real a idea about the amount of under water waste. Still they got at least 8 net bags full of trash. Lots of media people and even the Romanian television arrived to this first big Greenpeace action within the Clean Water tour in Romania. Well, actually it is not a real Greenpeace action but an activity which should raise the public awareness about environmental protection. An important issue in a country like Romania where the pollution in industrial regions like in Baia Mare is so incredible that many people suffer serious health problems. In order to keep the lake more or less clean the activists from Baia Mare painted many signs with the message that people should care about the clean maintainance of their lake.
Oki, enough about work – there is also the fun part. Like the campfire in the evening, with Romanian-German song competitions and the sweet taste of Palika...
