Lake Cleaning
07 Jul 2002,
Firiza (RO), Steffen Nichtenberger

The day of the Lord

Finally the time had come to present the fruits of 3 days of hard work to the people in Firiza-village, which, obviously, is situated next to the lake. Our activists took the bags with the separated waste to the village and talked to the inhabitants, explaining them why it is important not to throw trash into the lake and how to separate garbage in a proper way. We also offered the people to analyse drinking water from their private wells, an offer which many of them did accept. Unfortunately the results of the analyses showed a high concentration of nitrates, a hazardous substance to health, in many wells. To reach as much people as possible, we decided to start this event right after the celebration in the church. So when the local priest heard about our activities, he sent a basket full with blessed bread to us, intending to bless Greenpeace and our activists, who again showed a great effort in protecting the environment.

Meanwhile a handful of Greenpeacers were on their way in Baia Mare to make a questionnaire about the environmental situation in the region. Outcome of one half-day of work was 150 people giving their proposal on how to improve nature and environment in Baia Mare.

But now ist time to say goodbye to the beautyful landscape of the Firiza lake and to departure to new adventures in Romania.
